What is Mass Communication?

The Department of Mass Communication, Advertising & Public Relations offers a Bachelor of Mass Communication. Within that degree program, students can select a specialization in advertising, public relations, or digital media. The curricula in advertising and in public relations prepare students for careers in those fields, and the communication studies option provides a foundation for roles as professional communicators in other fields or for further education at a more advanced level.

Mass communication is mostly a one-way process, with little feedback from the audience, although the Internet is bringing some change, with options that allow people to comment or otherwise provide feedback.

Mass communication plays four roles in society:

  • Surveillance: Provides news and information to the public.
  • Interpretation: Sets a context for new information and provides commentary about its significance and meaning.
  • Socialization: Transmits values within a society, especially in setting models for behavior and attitudes.
  • Entertainment: Entertains through film, radio, television, sound recordings, books, and magazines.

More than ever, thanks in part to the exponential growth of social media and communication technology, public relations managers and specialists have become the cornerstone liaisons between business organizations and the general public. By creating informative and carefully constructed public images, press releases, product and service information, and strategic responses to public inquiries, public relation workers are in a unique position to influence the perceptions of the general masses.
