KIC IT research team published their work on “IoT and Sign Language System (SLS)” in the International Journal of Engineering Research and Technology.
In this research, an Internet of Things (IoT)-based framework for speech translating into UAE sign language is described. It addresses the issue of students with hearing problems facing challenges, when attending mainstream colleges unless they receive proper help and support. The introduced in the research paper helps the identified students of determination in learning and understanding the speech in the class by translating the spoken language into UAE sign language.
Components of this system are Speech Recognizer to detect the speech, Natural Language Processor to process the text using google speech API to do syntactic and morphological analyses, and Video Generator to connect Sign Language System with the database to generate the corresponding video streams of the UAE sign language. SLS focuses mainly on UAE students. This research is under development and aims to convert sign language into speech to assist the deaf in fully interacting with society.
It creates a paradigm for future studies of building an automatic Sign language translator for all languages.
Over the years KIC has exhibited its relentless effort in educating and graduating students of determination, envisioning an all-inclusive society. Currently, students of determination are enrolled in IT and CGA programs at KIC.
This research was executed by Dr. Samar Mouti, Assistant professor, IT department, and Mr. Samer Rihawi, Lecturer, IT Department, in cooperation with Mr. Hussam Eid (Sign Language Translator at KIC) and was published in the International Journal of Engineering Research and Technology.
