Plagiarism

Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. “It is a breach of academic integrity.” All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition. Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional. Under the regulations for examinations, intentional or reckless plagiarism is a disciplinary offence.

How to avoid Plagiarism?

  • Before writing the summery, you should make sure that you have a good understanding of the topic. Use several resources in different format such as printed publications and electronic resources from the given list of available resources. You will be less likely to inadvertently plagiarize.
  • Write about the topic strictly in your own words and cite your sources. It is not the proper way to use the synonyms and other words, this will closely imitate the resources you are referring. You should also cite ideas, opinions and theories which are not your own.
  • For web sources cite the web page containing the information and include the URL and the date when you copied the page.
